In this episode, we join Umesh Salanke, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, to talk about how he supports junior doctors in The Trust on their professional journey. Umesh reflects on the importance of family in his leadership style, having faith in yourself and how to approach challenges and limitations. Umesh shares some great advice on how you can support your team members in accepting failures and moving forward when things don’t go according to plan.

3 Quotes to lead by...

1. THE CONCEPT OF FAMILY
‘So for me, the concept of family is very important. When you start correlating that, you don’t see them as numbers, you see your colleagues as friends.’

Q. How can you create a more family-orientated environment at work?

2. HAVE FAITH IN YOURSELF
‘As a clinician in the NHS, my suggestion or advice would be to have faith in yourself. If you are 50, 22 years old, an 18 year old, you have 18 years of experience, don’t underestimate that, look back and see what were those difficult times where you were really pushed and what did you do at that time because that is the most important thing where you have learnt about yourself more than anything else.’

Q. Think back to a challenge you have faced. How did you approach or overcome that challenge, and what did you learn?

3. SOMETIMES WE FAIL, ACCEPT IT
‘We’ve got to accept failures, yes, not a failure as a word, but as long as you’ve given it 100%, as long as you’ve been honest, open and given your everything to make that happen then whether I’m a leader or a colleague or a friend, I’m happy with that because not everything comes ready made and sometimes we fail, accept that.’

Q. How do you support your team members when things are not going to plan? How can you help your team to learn from any failures?
