We spent some time with Deanne Hastilow, Cardiology Team Leader, to talk about how she helps new starters to initiate into her team. Deanne reflects on her responsibility as a line manager to ensure that anyone she recruits feels happy, comfortable and knows what their job role entails. By putting time in at the very start, Deanne hopes to reassure new starters, instil good performance within her team and ensure that she retains the staff she has recruited.

‘I think if you give people the tools in the first place to show them how we do things, what we’re working towards, then everybody is working the same, and hopefully, our performance is good performance rather than having to manage negative performance.’
Q. How do you share your team’s goals with new starters? What materials are available to help orientate new members to your department?

‘The benefit of what we’re doing with new starters is that we are retaining staff…It’s helping retain the staff we’ve spent time nurturing to keep them within our team and for them to want to stay within our team.’
