We joined Fiona Wyton, Director of Nursing at Solihull, to talk about decision-making as a leader. Fiona reflects on resilience, learning from your mistakes, being a critical friend and the importance of support in leadership. This is a valuable and informative episode for anyone in a leadership role.
3 Quotes to lead by...
1. A CRITICAL FRIEND
‘I’m the critical friend now. I’m the person who asks the questions, and that isn’t because I’ve necessarily got the answer, but between us, we will achieve more than me telling because I might not necessarily tell them the right answer.’
Q. When a team member asks for your advice, are you taking the time to explore their thoughts and considerations? Do you work through the problem together, rather than jumping straight in and offering a solution?
2. RESILIENCE IS KEY
‘As a leader, resilience is key. Nobody wants, and this is a very common term certainly in the NHS, is flapping. Nobody wants a flapper. I have been that person, and it’s taken reflection to realise that I’ve done that. I’ve also been very reactive in the past because of the fear of no one making a decision, and I’ve made a decision too quickly. So the leader I am now, I think, is far more measured and calm.’
Q. How could you further develop your resilience as a leader?
3. DON’T GO INTO LEADERSHIP ALONE
‘Don’t ever go into leadership alone. You need to surround yourself with people who will support you, guide you, advise you, wave the flag for you, but do you know what? Even give you some harsh feedback.’
Q. Who can you go to for advice, guidance, support and feedback?
