‘It’s really important to use the appraisal process to identify how staff can progress and how we can support that. Often you’ll find that your really good staff want to progress, and you do as a manager think, well, I don’t want to lose you, but actually it’s an amazing feeling when somebody does go out into the world and goes into a new role, and you feel you’ve actually helped them progress and gain the knowledge and skills to do that.’
